Cake Smash Ideas for a Baby Girl's First Birthday
A cake smash is a short photo session where a baby meets her first birthday cake and is allowed to do whatever she wants with it. It usually happens around her first birthday, at a studio or at home in the living room. These cake smash ideas for a baby girl cover color themes, the cake itself, how to set up at home, and how to keep her happy long enough to get the photos.
When to do a cake smash
Some parents plan the cake smash a week or two before the party, so the photos are ready for the invitations or for a display on the day. Others do it at the party itself. Either way, choose a time right after her nap, when she has eaten a little but is still curious about food. Late morning is usually best for window light.
Cake smash ideas and color themes
Pink and gold
The classic first birthday look: a pink cake, a gold number one balloon and a few pink and white balloons behind her. A hot pink tutu dress like Diana Fuchsia stands out against a pale backdrop. For something softer, the Rosa champagne and gold brocade dress picks up the gold.
All white and floral
A white cake, a cream backdrop and dried or silk flowers around the set. Pair it with a white dress such as Elena, which has 3D flowers around the neckline, or the Victoria white lace dress. Keep fresh flowers in the background and off the cake.
Rainbow and unicorn
Rainbow sprinkles, a unicorn horn on the cake and pastel balloons. The rainbow unicorn tutu dress has a white top and a tiered rainbow skirt, so it matches the cake without competing with it.
Berry sweet
Strawberries, red and pink tones and a "Berry First Birthday" banner. Fresh berries make a good snack between shots, cut into small pieces for her.
First bee-day
Yellow and black, a honeycomb cake and a little bee on top. A yellow tulle dress like the Diana yellow tutu fits the theme.
Winter onederland
For a winter baby: a white cake with snowflakes, silver balloons and a fluffy rug. See our winter first birthday outfit ideas for dresses that work in cold weather.
Choosing the smash cake
- Keep it small. A 4 or 6 inch cake is plenty for one baby and easy to set in front of her.
- Choose light colored frosting. Strong food coloring, especially dark red, blue and black, can stain skin and fabric.
- Buttercream or whipped cream frosting is soft enough for her to dig into. Fondant is hard to grab and less fun.
- If she has not had egg, dairy or wheat yet, talk to her pediatrician before the cake smash.
- Take the cake out of the fridge an hour before, so it is soft.
Some babies stare at the cake and do nothing. Break the top open a little with your finger, or let her watch you taste it. That is usually all the invitation she needs.
How to do a cake smash at home
- Choose a spot next to a large window and turn off the overhead lights. Side light from a window is softer than a flash.
- Put a plastic tablecloth or a shower curtain on the floor and tape a backdrop to the wall: paper, a sheet or a balloon garland.
- Get the camera down to her eye level. At her eye level, her face and the cake fit in the same frame.
- Ask a second adult to stand behind you, talk to her and make her laugh, so she looks toward the camera.
- Take the clean outfit photos first. Then bring out the cake and let her go.
- Have a bath ready. The bath photos afterward are often the cutest of the day.
Most cake smashes last 15 to 30 minutes. When she loses interest, the session is done.
What should she wear for her cake smash?
Pick something that looks good in photos and that you do not mind getting frosting on. A tulle tutu dress works well because the skirt spreads out around her when she sits. Some parents take the dress photos first and then change her into a simple diaper cover and crown for the messy part.
If frosting gets on a dress, spot clean it with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent as soon as you can. Our dresses can be hand washed gently or machine washed on a delicate cycle. The guide on how to fluff a tulle dress also walks through washing it step by step.
For sizes, the dresses for a first birthday are usually 1Y, and our size guide has the measurements.
Frequently asked questions
What do you need for a cake smash?
A small cake, a backdrop, something to cover the floor, a window for light and a bath ready afterward. A second adult to entertain her helps a lot.
What color cake is best for a cake smash?
Light colors such as white, pastel pink or soft yellow. Dark food coloring can stain her skin and her outfit.
How long does a cake smash take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes for the cake itself. Plan an extra 15 minutes before for clean photos and a bath afterward.
Do you do a cake smash before or after the party?
Either works. Doing it a week or two before gives you photos for the invitations or the party display. Doing it at the party lets family watch.
