2nd Birthday Party Ideas for Girls: Themes, Food & Activities

Toddler girl in a white lace birthday dress clapping at her birthday party

A second birthday is a different party from the first. She walks, she knows what cake is, and this time she will actually enjoy the balloons. She still naps in the middle of the day and gets tired fast, though, so the 2nd birthday party ideas that work best for girls are simple ones: a theme she recognizes, a short party, and activities she can join without waiting for her turn.

What she'll wear: the Victoria white lace dress with a fringe skirt, the Rosa champagne and gold brocade dress, or the Rosa mint and gold dress, all in 2T (2Y). See all our toddler birthday dresses.

Planning a party for a two-year-old

  • Plan the party around her nap. A late morning party after breakfast, or one that starts after her afternoon nap, catches her in a good mood.
  • Keep it to about an hour and a half or two hours. That is long enough to play, eat and open a few gifts before anyone melts down.
  • Keep the guest list small. A common rule of thumb is to invite as many children as her age plus one, so three little friends, plus family.
  • Set up a quiet corner with a blanket and a few books, for her and for any guest who needs a break.

2nd birthday party themes for girls

Two Sweet

A candy shop party with donuts, cupcakes and an ice cream bar for the grown-ups to serve. Pastel pink and mint balloons fit the theme, and so does a tulle dress in either color, like the Diana mint tutu dress.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

Gold stars, white and silver balloons, and the song she already knows by heart. It works for an evening party too, with fairy lights. A white or champagne dress suits the colors, such as Victoria or Rosa Powder.

Sweet as Can Bee

Yellow and black stripes, honeycomb decorations, a hive-shaped cake and lemonade. A yellow dress like the Diana yellow tutu makes her the queen bee.

Fairy garden

Flowers, butterflies, little mushrooms and wings for every guest. Our fairy themed party ideas cover decorations and games, and the fairy dresses for girls collection has the outfits.

Unicorns and rainbows

Rainbow balloons, a unicorn cake and a little sparkle on everything. Browse our unicorn dresses for a matching look.

Tea party

Small plates, a plastic tea set for each child, finger sandwiches and a floral tablecloth. A brocade dress like Rosa in mint and gold looks right at home at a tea table.

Winter wonderland

For a December or January birthday: snowflakes, white and silver balloons and hot cocoa for the adults. Plan for tights and a cardigan under a party dress. Our winter first birthday outfit ideas have tips that work just as well at two.

Activities two-year-olds enjoy

Two-year-olds play next to each other more than with each other, so pick activities that do not need rules or turns.

  • Bubbles, the more the better. A bubble machine keeps a whole group busy.
  • Balloons on the floor to kick and chase. Pick up any that pop right away, because the pieces are a choking risk.
  • A short dance party with songs she knows.
  • A coloring table with big paper and chunky crayons.
  • A sensory bin with dry pasta and scoops, with an adult watching.

Food and cake

Serve finger food in small pieces: cheese cubes, fruit, crackers and mini sandwiches. Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters for toddlers. Ask parents about allergies when they reply to the invitation.

For the cake, cupcakes are easier to serve than slices, and a small cake just for her lets her dig in for the photos.

A party at home

A party at home is easy to run at this age, and a living room is plenty. Move breakable things out of reach, keep decorations high, and give each activity its own corner so children can move from one to the next. Put the cake table somewhere little hands cannot reach until it is time to sing.

Party favors

Skip the candy bags. Bubbles, a board book, a small box of crayons or a sheet of stickers are things families actually use.

What should she wear?

Pick a dress she can walk, climb and sit on the floor in. A knee-length skirt is easier at this age than a long gown. Put her in comfortable shoes, and pack a second outfit for after the cake.

Not sure about the size? Toddler sizes on our dresses show her age in brackets, like 2T (2Y), and our size guide has the measurements. Our guide to 18 months vs 2T explains how baby and toddler sizes differ. If she is between sizes, choose the larger one.
